This laptop makes a pleasant first impression. It’s covered in sharp edge silver metal and has a soft lid on the top right with “Lenovo” engraved on it. The laptop screen is beautiful even at 40% brightness in battery saver mode. The viewing angles are great and the colors are vibrant. Excessive backlight leakage has been reported on the FHD model, but my laptop does pretty well in that respect. The monitor runs at 60hz and has no noticeable ghosting issues. The speakers are on the bottom front of the laptop, which is fine, but if you wrap a quilt or other covering over them, they are hidden.

Laptop inline keyboards are about 0.5 centimeters (about 0.2 inches) narrower than standard desktop keyboards. More noticeable, however, is that the number blocks are a bit cramped and limited in width, which can be a problem for those with larger hands. The cursor keys have been moved to the bottom row, so keys like Ctrl and Alt are only the same size as regular letter keys. Otherwise everything is basically where you expect it to be.
As for the TouchPad, Lenovo made good use of the available space, fitting a slightly recessed, comfortably sized keyboard into the reserved area. One thing that sets this laptop apart from others with similar features is the 79 Wh battery with legs. I did not run out of battery all at once, but after 2 hours and 45 minutes of browsing, writing, and streaming, I’m currently at 72% battery. A safe estimate of how long you can use it on a single charge seems to be 8.5-10 hours of battery life.

This Intel Core i7-7700HQ is a fast quad core processor based on the classic Kaby Lake architecture manufactured. The CPU supports Hyper-Threading and has a base clock frequency of 2.8 GHz, which can be boosted to 3.8 GHz with Turbo Boost. Several gaming laptops use this processor, which has a typical power consumption of 45 watts. Our test device, on the other hand, was limited to 35 watts, limiting its potential performance capabilities. If I correctly interpret the advanced options in the energy menu, the base clock frequency is 1.7 GHz and the TDP is 35 watts, but if I further reduce the TDP to 25 watts, I believe the base clock frequency will rise to 2.8 GHz. Of course, we’re not the only ones who think this is counterintuitive.
There are big differences between the Lenovo 720s-15 and 1050 Ti Max-Q. The new Max-Q design allows for great performance in this form factor, playing DOTA 2, Fortnite, Overwatch, Killing Floor 2 and Doom 2016* comfortably at 60 FPS on medium or high settings. A maximum GPU temperature of 71°C under load was observed on the under voltage setting. Using the Intel 620 IGP for productivity tasks, the CPU performed well under load. With step-downs applied, the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark was 2,307 to 2,165 on the graphics card and 3,672 on the CPU.

This Lenovo series laptop was lightly on the installed software cruft. I try to install the standard antivirus trial and the window 10, it can overall be cleaner than is typical on consumer hardware.

Fan noise is moderate and the fan seems to run all the time, but under gaming load it’s quieter than other discrete graphics laptops I have used. This could be due to Max-Q’s design or the 15.6 inch form factor.
This laptop throttles under load on standard settings. As you can see below, running Doom 2016 on high settings with the stock voltage curve will eventually result in GPU throttling. Infuriatingly, it throttles from a maximum of 1,680MHz to a maximum of 1,150MHz and stays there rather than dynamically choosing a midpoint. This behavior is only noticeable when the GPU is running continuously at near full load.
This laptop responds very well to voltages as low as -150mV on the CPU, easily surpassing Prime95 and Intel XTU. The GPU ran at -100mV with no crashes or frame drops. We didn’t try to lower these voltages as the current values allow for stable boost clocks and good battery life in games.
12. Temperature
Running at full load for long periods of time can cause the bottom of the laptop (especially near the CPU) to heat up to uncomfortable temperatures near 60 °C (140 °F). In our tests, the temperature in the middle of the keyboard was 46 °C (114.8 °F). To be honest, I expected throttled CPU, low TDP and Max-Q graphics to have a bigger impact here. Considering the processor temperature rose to 96 °C (204.8 °F) just after starting the stress test, it’s not surprising that the TDP might not be lowered aggressively. But that’s just a guess. Finally, the cooling system is very quiet, but unfortunately not particularly effective.
